This variation transforms the classic steamed pork bun into a golden, baked delight featuring a soft milk-bread style dough. Filled with savory sweet roast pork and finished with a sticky honey glaze, these buns are perfect for a warm snack or a dim sum style lunch.
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and yeast. Stir in warm milk, the egg, and softened butter until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
While the dough rises, prepare the filling. In a pan over medium heat, sauté the diced onion until soft.
Add the diced roast pork, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil to the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the mixture is sticky and well combined. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
Flatten each piece into a disc, place a spoonful of the cooled pork filling in the center, and gather the edges to seal tightly. Roll into a smooth ball.
Place the buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet, seam side down. Cover loosely and let them rest for 20 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake the buns for 15-18 minutes until they are golden brown on top.
Immediately brush the hot buns with honey for a shiny, sweet glaze before serving.
