This traditional Danish-inspired dinner features juicy lean beef patties coated in a crisp golden breadcrumb crust. Served with slowly caramelized onions that melt in your mouth, this dish offers a perfect balance of savory meat and sweet, tender toppings.
In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter with the olive oil. Add the sliced onions and sugar. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until the onions are soft and golden brown. Remove from pan and set aside.
While the onions cook, place the ground beef in a bowl and mix gently with the salt and pepper. Divide the meat into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties about 1/2 inch thick.
Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with the beaten egg, and one with breadcrumbs.
Dip each beef patty first into the flour (shake off excess), then into the egg, and finally press firmly into the breadcrumbs to coat both sides.
Wipe out the skillet used for onions and return to medium heat. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter.
Fry the breaded patties for about 4-5 minutes per side until the crust is golden brown and the beef is cooked through.
Serve the hot crispy patties immediately, topped generously with the warm caramelized onions.
