This traditional British pie features rich ground beef simmered in a savory gravy with tender onions, all encased in a flaky, golden puff pastry crust. It is the ultimate comfort food dinner that brings the warmth of a classic pub meal right to your kitchen table.
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 5 minutes until softened and translucent.
Add the ground beef and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until browned and no pink remains.
Sprinkle the flour over the meat mixture and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes to cook off the raw flour taste.
Gradually pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce while stirring. Add the thyme, salt, and pepper.
Simmer the mixture for 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly for 10 minutes.
Pour the beef filling into a 9-inch pie dish or baking dish.
Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet slightly on a floured surface so it is large enough to cover the dish.
Place the pastry over the filling, pressing the edges down against the rim of the dish to seal. Trim any excess pastry.
Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg and cut two small slits in the center to allow steam to escape.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deep golden brown. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
